International Business – Disciplines and Topics

John H. Dunning, in his summary of the literature (in Rugman, Alan M. 2009. The Oxford Handbook of International Business, Chapter 2) says that since the late 1980s International Business research examines “the role of institutions underpinning the cognition, motivation and behaviour of both MNEs and other organizations” (p.47) and that “scholarly contributors… have become much more multidisciplinary[and] methodologically and geographically diffuse”(p.60).

Here is a diagram showing – as a rough conception – academic streams closely associated to International Business. Globalization, FDI, MNEs, etc., are specific topics subsumed by the broader disciplines.IB Literature Streams
